HSM Offshore Energy, together with partners such as Smulders, Enersea, Vattenfall, and Shell, is involved in a research project by TU Delft and Tree Composites (TC). We are contributing to the research, design, and manufacturing process to replace complex welded connections with composite material joints.

TU Delft, together with Tree Composites, is researching the use of composites as a connecting material between tubes. The tubes of a jacket structure can form a node in various configurations, such as the double K, double Y, and X connections. A jacket node with TC connections is made from steel tube sections, wrapped with composite material to create an assembled TC connection. The idea is to save time by reducing welding hours on complex welded joints, as only the circumferential weld needs to be made.

The innovation of the TC connection replaces traditional welding in TKY connections. The research shows that the TC connection offers higher fatigue resistance, reduced steel volume, and a longer lifespan, which should lead to a lower cost. The improvement in fatigue resistance is achieved by avoiding stress concentrations that are usually present due to local wall bending, and by preventing residual stresses, brittleness, and notch effects caused by welding.

The expertise of HSM Offshore Energy was utilized in considering construction methods and possible effects on the material. HSM Offshore Energy also supplied materials used during laboratory tests.

The next testing phase involves implementing the composite connections on a scale model jacket. These tests are intended to assess the strength of the connections and serve as a ‘proof of concept.’ This important phase is scheduled for the end of 2024 and will take place at our yard in Schiedam.
